A Guide to Choosing Bespoke Footwear
When you decide to get bespoke footwear, you need to have a clear idea of what you want. You must know how the shoes will fit into your wardrobe and style. Don’t just tell the shoemaker that you want brown leather shoes. Be specific and be ready to describe your vision. Are the shoes for casual or formal wear? Do you want soft leather, patent leather, or thick soles? The more information you can offer, the more satisfied you will be with the final product.
Set a Budget
Understand that ordering bespoke shoes is a time-consuming and expensive process. If you are thinking about it, then you are probably aware that quality and beauty don’t come cheap. That being said, don’t spend a fortune on a pair of shoes. Have a limit that you are willing to spend on the shoes. A maximum amount will help guide decisions as you go about designing your shoes.
Be Patient with the Process
No guide to choosing bespoke footwear would be complete without a sample of the process. As you go into the process, it’s important to know that custom shoes take as long, if not longer, to make than custom suits. A pattern maker first measures your foot while you decide what type of shoe you want. You’ll pick out a design, color, pattern, and so on. Those measurements will be used to make a mold of your foot, also known as a last. The mold is used to make a pattern, and then the leather is cut in the shapes of that pattern and sewn together. Once the upper is made, it will be temporarily attached to the last to make a trial fit shoe. You’ll try it on, the craftsman will make any necessary adjustments, and then the shoe will be finished. It is a lengthy process that involves going back for several fittings and consultations. Quality takes time, so be patient.
